Alistair Cameron supports Ashchurch Army Depot

12.16.39pm GMT Fri 11th Dec 2009

Alistair Cameron, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Tewkesbury has given his support to keeping the MoD vehicle depot open at Ashchurch.

The Minstry of Defence are considering moving the Defence Storage and Distribution Agency (DSDA) which employs 400 people from Ashchurch to Donnington in Shropshire. They are currently consulting with Trade Unions over the possible relocation.

Alistair said: "The workforce at Ashchurch is highly skilled and has played a major role in ensuring our vehicles are properly maintained for use in conflicts such as in Afghanistan and Iraq. We need to keep this workforce together so that they can continue to maintain army vehicles up to the highest standard.

Tewkesbury and the surrounding area have already been hit badly by the recession. We cannot afford to lose such a large number of highly skilled jobs. The effect on the area will be devastating.

I am totally opposed to closing the depot and will be taking this up with the Ministry of Defence."
